The time has arrived again, another trip to Croker, our third semi-final in a row under James Horan, and it is time for all the talking to stop. It is game five of six as Mayo take on Tyrone in Croke Park on Sunday for a place in the All- Ireland final on September 22. I have one small fear ahead of the game, I’m sure it is only among the supporters and not the players, but a lot of people are dismissing Tyrone’s chances and are already wondering who Mayo will play in the final, I have never seen as many Mayo flags bought and as many green and red flags on cars and houses for a semi-final, we normally wait for a final for this to happen and that is a very dangerous way to be thinking before taking on the Red Hand. Confidence is one thing but cockiness is another. Have people forgotten that Tyrone have won three All- Irelands in the last 10 years and they completely demoralised far more superior Kerry teams than themselves in the not too distant past in finals. In the 2008 final, Kerry’s Tommy Walsh and Kieran Donaghy, the twin towers, were considered un-markable but Mickey Harte and the McMahon brothers found a way to do the job. Tyrone have an unbelievable capacity to frustrate you and get in your face, so to speak. They will annoy you and remind you of their success and Mayo’s failures in All-Ireland finals.

The benefit of the addition of former Kildare star James Kavanagh to Milltown’s senior football championship challenge was clear to see last Saturday evening at Pearse Stadium, as John Concannon’s side gave Cárna-Caiseal a good trimming, on a score-line of 3-14 to 0-5. Kavanagh kicked one terrific point in the first half and also notched a few frees in the second, but it was his work-rate, link-play and overall contribution to the cause that caught the eye. Experienced scoring forwards are hard to come by at the moment, and Kavanagh can be a really key player for the “Scans” as their season progresses.

Last Sunday was yet another disappointing experience for the Galway senior hurlers at the hands of their nemesis Kilkenny.

This year, on St Patrick’s evening, Bank Holiday Sunday, seven proud Mayo men will be putting it all out there to raise money, eyebrows and temperatures.

When Kilkenny got on a run in the third quarter the last day, they were driven on by the brilliance of Brian Hogan and Tommy Walsh. Hogan plucked two or three in a row out of the air and you almost feel the intake of breath and anxiety in the Galway crowd in the Hogan Stand.

Coming out of Dublin last Sunday evening on the motorway was a surreal experience. The motorway at 7.30pm was like some kind of mobile car park for Galway supporters as they trekked West after seeing their team play their part in one of the best hurling finals in years.
